HASH HOUSE HARRIERS

 H3

 EPISKOPI

“A merry company of athletic pedestrian sportsmen, who styled themselves ‘The Thames Hare and Hounds Club’ where we went to seek healthy pastime in the pursuit of a mock chase following a paper trail laid by two of their fellows. They usually met at the well know Public House ‘The King’s Head’, Rochampton Bottom, where they always enjoyed themselves in fitting attire. The running was tolerably correct, but always spirited and full of enjoyment.

Illustrated London News – 27 November 1869

When Brigadier Davies-Scourfield, CBE, MC, was posted to Episkopi in November 1967 he formed the second branch of the Hash House Harriers in Cyprus. Group Captain Basil Fox was the first President and Nik Pakenham Mahon and David Clarke the Joint Masters. Every valley within a 10 mile radius of Episkopi, except due South, has felt the tramp of Hashers’ feet and seen the fluttering of Hash Trash. The Hash runs all the year round for the benefit of those who find it too hot to swim in the summer and too cold to ski in winter. Hash Thrashes are held regularly so that we can entertain the ladies – thereby preserving domestic harmony. The Episkopi Hash is open to officers of the three Services and UK based civilians, and expatriates of officer status. Sons of Hashers (Hash Puppies) are very welcome but should be under the control of “Pater”.

HASH RULES

  1. The H3 is a club, already established in many parts of the world, with the aim of providing gentlemen (in some Hashes even Ladies) with the opportunity to take a little exercise once a week with a long term view to a drink of beer or shandy at the end of each week’s agony.

  1. The run takes the form of a paper chase beginning and ending at a place known as the RV to be decided by the 3 members responsible for the organisation of that week’s meeting (Hares). The chase is laid out with a number of checks so that the less fit can pause for breath whilst more fit members search for the next stage of the paper trail.

  1. There are very few rules but experience has proved the wisdom of the following:

    1. Dues, to pay for the reviving drinks, must be paid on the spot. Currently 5 Euros per week. The first and last runs are free! There is no charge for the Hares, who also provide the nuts.

    2. Members are to run at a gentle and becoming pace and assist their less fit fellows rather than make a dirty dash for the finish leaving the tail-enders to find the paper unaided. With this rule in mind:

                    i.      Runners who, by some chance, happen to be in front are to shout the famed Hash Cry of “ON ON”
so that those behind can follow the noise rather than the paper. This rule applies to leaders of ‘packets’.

ii.      Runners coming upon a check are to shout “Checking” until the trail is found. Thereafter – “ON ON” etc.

    1. The Joint Masters will rule on any matter not covered by these rules. Their decisions, other than financial ones, are always open to frank discussion.

ADVICE FOR HARES

  1. Hares are responsible for:

    1. The selection of the area for their run and the start point. In choosing the latter Hares should allow parking space for at least thirty vehicles.

    2. Selection and recce of route.

    3. Signing entrance to start point (at least 40-50 minutes before the run).

    4. Collection, from previous week’s Hares, of the Hash signs.

    5. Laying the trail. Whilst on this subject it should be remembered that a Steve Cram does not lurk within all of us. In the summer months a run of 30 minutes is probably enough; in the cooler weather a longer run is reasonable up to an absolute maximum of one hour. The trail itself:

                          i.      Should be of reasonable consistency – not too thick, not too sparse.

ii.      A large scatter of 5 or more lumps of paper indicates a check. The last 3 pieces of trash leading to a

check should be at right angles to it, thereby indicating the angle of search.

iii.      Distance between a check and new trail should not normally exceed 150 metres.

iv.      On no account should a trail be laid across crops.

                        v.      For obvious reasons great care should be taken to ensure that no part of a trail runs close to another
                                 part of that trail.

vi.      The last ¼ mile of any run, or when the blessed end is in sight, should be a clear straight run home
and preferably downhill (unless the Hare is an incurable optimist).

    1. The collection and return of the beer, lemonade and nuts. There is a Standing Order with HQ BFC Officers’ Mess but always confirm pick up times. As all items are provided on a ‘sale or return’ basis, empties and the balance of full bottles must be returned to the Mess after the Hash.

    2. At the following week’s run it is the responsibility of the Hares from the week previous to produce a run report for the “Inside Angle” and forward it to Hash Words, preferably by e mail.

  1. Remember that the Run Master likes to publish the Run List on the website (episkopihashhouseharrierscyprus.org) frequently. Do therefore confirm your RV and arrangements for the Chop with the Run Master as far ahead as possible.
